Report on the celebration of 10th October

On the 10th October, the European Division of the World Federation for Mental Health in collaboration with the Hellenic Psychiatric Association organized a concert with immense success at the Megaron of Athens to celebrate the Mental Health Day 2010. The 450 seats of the Dimitri Mitropoulos theater of the Megaron were all occupied very early in the evening. If we knew we would have organized the event in a greater theater (perhaps next year). Before the concert there were two talks: By Professor George Christodoulou on behalf of the WFMH and by Professor Nikos Tzavaras, on behalf of the Hellenic Psychiatric Association. Both speakers explained the message of this year’s theme, pointing out that mental health and physical health go hand in hand and that the theme is in line with the WHO dictum “No Health without Mental Health”. Issues like the alleged dangerousness of psychiatric patients, the myths about certain psychiatric treatments like ECT and medication as well as stigma issues were also discussed.
The concert that followed was performed by the Symphony Orchestra of the city of Patras, the Choir of the Greek Radio and Television Corporation and singers among which protagonistic role was played by well-known opera singer Fotini Darra. Composer Dimitris Papadimitriou conducted the orchestra and choir in a piece composed by himself, based on poetry by Greek poet George Seferis (Nobel prize winner in poetry, whose daughter was present during the performance). The audience received the performance with great enthusiasm and expressed appreciation for the fact that all performers volunteered to participate without payment.
The event was preceded on the 8th October by a Press Conference of the Hellenic Psychiatric Association in the presence of Dimitris Papadimitriou and Fotini Darra, during which the history of the world mental health days was mentioned and the mission of the WFMH and its achievements were stressed.
This was an exceptional opportunity to pass some important messages and also promote the visibility of the Federation.
The Press Conference and the concert were covered widely by the Press and Television.
